August Birthstone- Peridot

The official birthstone for August has quite a background in history and legend. Peridot's color ranges from yellowish-olive, to brownish green. The most popular is the dark olive green.

To the Hawaiian's peridot was believed to be the tears of the goddess Pele.  In the bible it is listed as chrysolite. Cleopatra had a couple mines of it, and referred to it as Evening Emerald, as the color held its intensity in the failing light.

It was said to give the wearer: good luck, peace, success, good health, protection, sleep, attract love, calm anger and dis-spell negative emotion. Quite a list for a stone.

On the Moh's scale of hardness, the stone is rated 6.5-7. Meaning it's okay to wear everyday, but not great. Avoid changes in temperature and contact with chemicals, as they have no resistance to acids.

These semi-precious stones can be easily cleaned with standard dish soap and a toothbrush.
